Poetry slam is not yet a fully explored genre in Eastern European countries. In Hungary it appeared only in 2006 and is still unknown to the wide public. Budapest Slam, hosted first in 2006 by Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle Budapest) is considered to be the pioneering slam event in Hungary, which led to the gradual increase of interest among young poets, rappers and other performers. Since then a new scene of performance poetry has clearly begun to take shape, backed by the Slam Poetry Budapest (SPB) crew. SPB came into being in 2008 when its young and ardent members started to hold regular slams every last weekend of the month.
By 2011 the amateur group of slammers and organizers has grown to become a cultural non-profit association, headed by young slammaster Katalin Mavrak aka Hugee. Besides her, the daily administration and activities are handled by a small team comprised of Sára Szabó, Kati Stráhl, Péter Németh aka Zeek and Zoltán Prekopcsák, while the wider membership boasts such famous Hungarian poets as Virág Erdős, Mari Falcsik, János Háy, Zoltán Poós, Endre Szkárosi, Ákos Szilágyi, Tamás Jónás, János Térey, Gábor Gyukics, Ágnes Bárdos Deák, Krisztián Peer, József Keresztesi. The mission of the association is to increase the awareness of how strongly this genre is able to call attention to various societal and global issues.
